Ready for a Career Change? Make Your Dreams a Reality

Posted in Career on January 5th, 2021

It is likely that you will spend the majority of your adult life working. Therefore, you must find a job or career that you love – a role that you will be continually excited about and will bring a smile to your face. Of course, you don’t have to love every aspect of your job because, let’s face it, nobody likes getting out of bed in the morning. But you should, at least, be passionate about what you do.

With that in mind, here are some signs that you are not properly enjoying your job and may benefit from a career change:

  • You no longer find your role challenging or believe there is nothing left to learn.
  • You don’t get excited about your work.
  • You lack motivation, even when completing the smallest tasks.
  • You feel as though you are not making an impact within your company/industry.
  • Your job affects your personal life; you spend too much time thinking about work when you should be enjoying yourself.
  • You think your skills could be better applied elsewhere.

If any of the above apply to you, it may be time to consider a career change. Whether that means you think of a new business idea and found your own company or search for an entry position in a new industry – doing so is bound to be exciting. If you have always had a dream career in mind but have never tried to obtain it – now is the time. What are you waiting for?

Here’s how you can turn your dreams into reality!

Get the Appropriate Training

Though your previous experiences will undoubtedly have allowed you to develop many transferable skills, you might need to retrain if you are going for a career in a different industry. For example, suppose you have worked exclusively in administration. In that case, you’ll have a whole host of communication skills, but if you now want to work as an accountant, you’ll need to get an accountant certification. Thankfully, companies such as COPAS can get you started on the right foot, providing you with high-quality training in all aspects of accountancy and beyond.

Ask Questions

If you aren’t sure how to find your way into your chosen industry – use LinkedIn or similar sites to get in touch with those already working within the field. While you shouldn’t over face them with hundreds of questions, a polite, introductory message alongside a request for some advice is perfectly fine. Learning from others is a great way to get started, and they may also be able to point you in the direction of a job.

Research All of the Industries That Interest You

Before you can fully commit to the right job, you need to know what’s available. The chances are that you’ll have an idea of what you want, but there could be something waiting in the wings for you to pounce on later on down the line. You may want to work in real estate as a property conveyancing professional right now, but who knows where you’ll be in five years’ time. It may sound a little tedious because you’ll want to get moving as soon as possible, but be sure to store up as much knowledge beforehand as you can.

Don’t Be Afraid to Start Small

Sometimes, when undergoing a career change, you need to be prepared to start from the bottom and work your way up. This may mean that you have to give up a position of seniority in your current role to take a much smaller role elsewhere. If this is true, do not be disheartened. Remember that everybody must start somewhere – and this will be worth it if it helps you enjoy your work again.
